WP CLOSED 2013 SETS A NEW SOUTH AFRICAN RECORD!!

The Western Province Closed 2013 ended on a spectacular note confirming it as South Africa’s biggest ever “sections” tournament with 26 round-robin categories and an u/8 -10 Swiss for the little ones.

A massive well done to all the participants and organizers for contributing to this outstanding achievement in the history of chess in SA! We can safely say that chess in Cape Town is healthier than it’s ever been all thanks to a great team of dedicated people in the union of CWP (Chess Western Province).

A total of 232 players from all ages and areas around the Mother City braved the cold weather over the past four days at the Eversdal Primary School to take part in what is known to be one of Western Province’s most prestigious tournaments of the year where you get to prove yourself against players of similar strength.

The overall winner was defending champion Fide Master Donovan Van den Heever with a score of 6/7 ahead of FM Calvin Klaasen and Bryan Aguirre who ended 2nd & 3rd respectively in Section A. African Chess Lounge’s Reuben Salimu was the winner of the B section and earns himself a place in the top section for next year. The u/8-10 Swiss saw a tie for first place between Jaryd Marcom Lleyton OlkersEthan Webber won the Gold Medal for best u8.
