11 March 2019

Dear Chess Enthusiast

Chess Western Province had the pleasure of hosting a very successful 2019 Western Cape Women’s Open Chess Championship over the weekend of 08 to 10 March under the auspices of Western Cape Chess.

Sans Souci Girls’ High School was a very fitting venue for this event. The Western Cape Department of Culture and Sport (DCAS) made it possible for us to host the tournament and we acknowledge and thank DCAS for their continued support of Chess in the Western Cape. Female players from as far as the Eden district arrived in their numbers to participate in this prestigious event.

Crossroads and Ravensmead players were amongst the winners and it seems that chess is flourishing in these areas as a direct result of all the time and work that is being invested into the game by some very committed individuals. Eden district players won most of the prizes in the B-Section and special thank you to the Eden Chess leadership for making it possible for the girls to compete.

Special mention must be made of Anieke Matthee. Anieke is 7 years old and decided to participate in the Prestige Section of the WC Women’s open in preparation for her participation in the upcoming SA Junior Closed Chess Championships.

To Anieke and all our other Junior players, both male and female, we wish you all the very best of luck at the upcoming Junior Closed as well.
