WATU wins with a perfect 7!
An impeccable display of chess genius from one of South Africa’s most successful and experienced chess greats, International Master Watu Kobese. Watu is predominantly from Gauteng but moved to Cape Town to further his chess career less than 2 years ago. This has to be his best performance yet with an unblemished scoreline competing against some of SA’s very best. FM Shabir Bhawoodien gave a strong performance and only losing to Watu in the end gave him a well deserved 2nd place. International Master Henry Steel finished tied 3rd with Bernard Klein & Michael James.
THANKS:
A big thank to you to all the participants especially the Angolan players and for showing a warm chess spirit throughout the event.
To the Sid.G.Rule Primary School, we are thankful for such a great venue for chess. It was the first major chess event held in the Grassy Park area and proved to be perfect with ease of access to the venue, nice tuck-shop and spacious for spectators and players to enjoy.
