Reflections on Steinitz (1) by Dr Lyndon Bouah

9 November 2016

Next year the chess club Steinitz will be celebrating its fortieth anniversary as a chess club. I will be starting a series of historical sketches about Steinitz chess club. Who is the membership of Steinitz, what is their history, where did they come from, what role has the club played in WP and South African history. Come join me as I explore what the make-up is of Steinitz chess club.

For now I want you the reader to please save the date 13-17 April 2017. The Easter weekend will be used to stage the Steinitz Cape Town international 2017 – Fortieth anniversary event. The event will be held in the Proteaville Recreation Centre, Peter Barlow Drive in Bellville South.

The event will be played in different sections. Headlining our event will be a super women event in which we will be staging possibly the strongest event held in the last two years. Watch this space!

The next section will be an Elite FIDE Rated Seven round Swiss event for players 1800 and above. This will be a challenging section but we want all the top players to compete in this section.

The next section will be a Prestige FIDE rated seven round Swiss for players rated above 1400. This will allow players not in the Elite to compete robustly.

We then have a Chessa rated A and B section seven round Swiss which will be separated by rating.

A blitz event is also planned for the Saturday.

To accommodate the little ones we are planning two sections of under 8 and under 10 to round off the sections.

Easter weekends was always filled with bumper sport events in the past. Steinitz now requests the pleasure of your company subject to you paying the requisite entry fee to celebrate our success as a chess club by playing beautiful chess over that Easter Weekend.

Players from afar that wishes to play and who needs assistance with accommodation please write early to us so that we can assist you as we want you to play! We will assist where we can!

The entry form can be found at .
And on our website on

I look forward to welcoming you next Easter.
