Reflections by Dr Lyndon Bouah: Steinitz Chess Club – Article 2

The 40th Anniversary Steinitz International Open starts on 13 April 2017 in Bellville South, Cape Town. The event starts with. A blitz competition at 7pm. ( incidentally it is also former world champion Gary Kasparov’s birthday.)

The event has truly become an International event with winners coming from across the world. This year Grandmaster Sahaj Grover will try to take the title to India. The winners over the last few years are :

2016 : Amini Daud ( Zimbabwe)
2015 : GM Aleksa Strikovic ( Serbia )
2014 : GM Aleksa Strikovic ( Serbia)
2013 : IM Watu Kobese ( SA )
2012 : Craig Willenberg (SA)
2007 : GM Kenny Solomon ( SA)

The event has many different sections and rating prizes as well. So there is something for everyone. We have many Olympiad player such as IM Watu Kobese ( recent winner of the Cape Town Heritage event) and FM Calvin Klaasen who is the current WP Open and Vlosed Champion.

On the women’s front SA closed Champion WIM Denise Frick will be competing against her teammates WIM Anzel Laubscher and WIM Jesse February. There appears to be a renewed interest in women’s chess and I hope to see some good games.

The two rounds a day will allow us to see some good games as players can prepare. The pairings will be available on .

I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Dr Lyndon Bouah
