Paul Roos Open Chess Championship 2018

Paul Roos Gymnasium, in collaboration with Stellenbosch Chess Club and Maties Chess Club, invites all chess players in the Western Cape to take part in the historical Paul Roos Open Chess Championships of 2018.  The tournament will be the first FIDE-rated tournament hosted in the beautiful Cape Winelands.  The PRG Open will have 4 rating bands in which players may compete.

The tournament will start with the Elite and A sections making their opening moves on Friday evening, 21 September 2018, and will conclude with the last checkmate on Sunday, 23 September 2018.  The tournament will be hosted at the beautiful and famous Markotter rugby fields in Stellenbosch.

The tournament is appropriately placed during Heritage month and will be held over the weekend of Heritage Day.  Let us celebrate one of the most beautiful products of our heritage: chess!

We also want to congratulate and wish our national teams well as they prepare to battle with the world’s best players at the 43rd Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia from 23 September 2018.

SAS (Stellenbosch Academy of Sport) is able to assist with accommodation for the weekend. Rate: includes meals and VAT at R500 per person, per night, in sharing accommodation. Contact Nicole Pharo to secure bookings at
