I recently had occasion to visit Mauritius. I stayed for eleven days and during that sojourn I also met up with my friend Patrick Li Ying from the Mauritius National chess team. He came to fetch my wife, Denise and I, from the hotel and took us on a brief tour of the Island.

Western Province Chess got off to powerful start with a fully packed Cape of Good Open held at Bellville Technical High School over the weekend. An impressive 228 chess players gathered and competed over 4 sections. Amid the water crisis, it was a weekend of battles of a different kind.
