Aurecon Chess Club will be hosting its first ever chess tournament this year. While not a conventional chess club, Aurecon is an engineering and infrastructure advisory company, specialising in various disciplines of engineering. An international juggernaut, with offices worldwide including in Africa, Australia, New Zeeland, Asia and the Middle East.
What started off as friendly chess games between a few colleagues in Aurecon’s Cape Town office during lunch, ultimately led to the forming of a chess club in 2016. While still in its infancy, the chess club continues to grow in stature and has been a household name in the Western Province League since 2016.
The Rapid tournament being held on the 13th of October 2018 will be a first for the club. The club has decided to honour Aurecon’s former Global Chairman, Professor GJ (Jakes) Gerwel, by naming the tournament in his honour. Professor Gerwel was an enthusiastic social chess player and his son, Heinrich, remembered the many chess games he and his farther played over the years, proclaiming it to be just one of so many skills he had learned from his father.
The tournament will be hosted at Aurecon’s premises in Century City, which was the first awarded 5-star green-star environmentally friendly building built in South Africa. Aurecon Chess Club is confident that the tournament will be a major success, with some great chess battles, tremendous ingenuity on the battlefields, but most importantly, having some fun! Entry fees for students and scholars are only R20.
