Chess Western Province is happy to announce that we have come to the end of a very successful year which boasts a list of outstanding achievements by its members and clubs alike.

This was all topped off with a memorable awards ceremony that took place at the Curro Private School in Durbanville over the weekend and was made even more prestigious with the attendance of WC Department of Sport & Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Ivan Meyer.

Some of this year’s highlights:

  • We saw Steinitz Chess Club win the National Club Championship title for the 7th time in 11 years.
  • As a union we had 9 clubs participating in the Western Cape Club Champs this year which shows positive sign of growth & organization within our clubs. The event was won by Steinitz in successful defence of their title.
  • The WP League had a massive 54 team’s take part this year with a number of new clubs that entered. Our WP Open attracted a record breaking 400 participants.
  • The WP Closed made name for itself as the biggest ever sections tournament in the country with 26 round-robin categories and an U/8-10 Swiss for the little ones.
  • IM Watu Kobese was the best player SA player at the Commonwealth Championship in PE.
  • FM Deon Solomons & FM Calvin Klaasen ended 2nd & 6th Zone 4.3 Champs in Botswana and both earned the title of Fide Master.
  • IM Robert Gwaze finished 4th in an elite Grandmaster section at the DSK Chess Festival.
  • We also have the African U/8 girls champion Natasha Joubert & the U/10 boys champion Seth-Riley Adams!

This year the annual CWP Awards ceremony was integrated with the awarding of youth WP Colours in an effort to get our juniors to identify and become familiar with the chain of continuity in chess leading from youth into club level.
