Cape Town Classic Chess Festival 2019

01 April 2019

A fierce chess battle took place this past weekend at the Cape Town Classic Chess Festival which was held at the Groote Schuur High School.  18 teams of varying strengths took part and it was great to see our up and coming youngsters participating as well and in some instances giving some of our top players a run for their money.  A number of our really strong teams who participate in the Premier division of the CWP League (MRL, ACL, Steinitz, et al) took part in the CT Classic and it made for very strong chess. It was also great to see the Delft Technical School participating in a chess tournament for the first time and we look forward to seeing them in many tournaments to come.

Our thanks must go to our sponsor for this event, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport for their ongoing sponsorship and support of Chess in the Western Cape.

The tournament took place over two days, kicking off on Friday the 29th with a 9 round Team Blitz and concluding on Saturday the 30th with a 7 round Team Rapid.  In a hard fought battle between MRL, ACL and Steinitz, MRL emerged as the winner. And the following players were victorious on their specific boards winning the board prize:

Board 1 : FM Calvin Klaasen

Board 2 : CM Lyndon Bouah

Board 3 : Kian Blows

Board 4 : Cherwin Kleinsmidt

Thanks to everyone who participated and congratulations to MRL for winning the Cape Town Classic Chess Festival 2019.
